Metatron - another malevolent myth

Writer's picture: Dean DwyerDean Dwyer

At present, I am preaching through a series which I have entitled “Understanding the Unseen”.  As the title suggests, I am covering topics related to the unseen realm.  Needless to say, it is an enormous study and encompasses a wide variety of subtopics which takes us from Genesis to Revelation.  One of the areas of interest is the angelic realm.  This realm, hidden from mortal eyes (with the exception of incidences recorded in the Bible), is a subject which has fascinated people for thousands of years.  However, this fascination has led some people to developing ideas which are not only unbiblical they are leading people away from Jesus.

One such idea is the existence of a celestial being by the name of Metatron.  Although there are different theories around the origins of Metatron, the most popular explanation states that he was the Enoch mentioned in Genesis 5:24: And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.  According to proponents of this theory, Enoch was transformed into the angel Metatron by virtue of his faith in God and his perfectly pious conduct.  He was supposedly raised up to that position in order to replace Lucifer.  According to the Book of 3 Enoch (which is not the inspired or authoritative Word of God): “God clothes Metatron in a garment of glory, puts a royal crown on his head and calls him "the Lesser YHWH".  Some, such as The Theosophical Society in America claim that Metatron is actually Jesus: “There is a kind of subordinate God, a ‘second God,’ through whom the high God relates to the universe and through whom he created the universe. This subordinate God is actually an angel — the Son of Man, Metatron.”

So, what are the main activities of this Metatron character?  Metatron’s primary role is to teach people how to use their spiritual power for good while he records their choices in the universe’s great archive.  This archive, often referred to as the Akashic Records, are believed by Theosophists to be a compendium of all universal events, thoughts, words, emotions and intent ever to have occurred in the past, present, or future in terms of all entities and life forms, not just human.  New Agers also claim that Metatron can bring healing.  If you have ever read Ezekiel chapter 1, you will know that Ezekiel bears witness to a very strange sight which, in simple terms, gives reference to God’s throne-chariot.  Despite this being clear to us, it certainly hasn’t stopped people from speculating it is a UFO!  But New Agers also claim it is reminiscent of something they call Metatron’s Cube.  This Cube, according to adherents of sacred geometry, oversees the flow of energy and contains all of the geometric shapes in God's creation.  Those who believe in Metatron’s abilities claim that Metatron uses that Cube to heal people of unhealthy energies that they want to clear out of their lives.

Some even claim that whenever you sense an urge to replace a negative thought with a positive one, that urge may be a sign from Metatron. Apparently, Metatron is especially concerned about how people think because his work keeping the universe's records constantly shows him how people's negative thoughts lead to unhealthy choices while people's positive thoughts lead to healthy choices.  In her book, "Metatron: Invoking the Angel of God's Presence," Rose Vanden Eynden claims Metatron will help you "rid yourself of all energies that do not serve your own higher good or the will of the Creator." She continues: "Now, as you stand enveloped in the Archangel's fiery presence, you feel the intense healing of his nature enter your mind. All negative thoughts are instantly wiped from your consciousness and replaced with the burning passion of love. This is love for all things, all creatures, love for yourself and for all of Creator's magnificent beings."

According to New Agers, Metatron's experience living on Earth as a person (Enoch) supposedly gives him a special ability to relate to people who want to connect with him.  According to one New Age website:  “In this way, Archangel Metatron is one of the most powerful archangels in this New Age because he directly represents our capacity for ascension and our ability to access spiritual power.”  Worse, they go on to claim that: “Metatron has unlimited power to intercede on our behalf whenever we need him.”  Another New Ager writes: “His high rank as possibly the highest angel or ‘Prince of the Countenance’ underscores his unique proximity to God, making him a pivotal mediator between the divine realm and humanity.”

In a recent sermon, I emphasised that the first test for any doctrine is what it has to say about Jesus Christ and whether it lines up with Scripture.  Metatron is at best a myth and at worst a terrible deception which is leading people away from Jesus.  The Bible tells us that we have an intercessor, but it is certainly not Metatron.  Hebrews 7:25 testifies of Jesus: Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.  Additionally, Metatron is not a “pivotal mediator”.  Once again, we see the Scriptures clearly declare of Jesus in 1 Timothy 2:5: For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.

Satan has many tools at his disposal to blind the minds of mankind.  His most potent weapons are deception and false religion which he uses to keep people from coming to a saving knowledge of the truth as it is found in Jesus Christ.  I will repeat what I said earlier – the first test for any doctrine is what it has to say about Jesus.  Just prior to speaking about deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons in 1 Timothy 4:1, Paul said this in 1 Timothy 3:16: And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up in glory.  To promote the belief that Metatron is the pivotal mediator between mankind and God is to completely disregard the truth of the Scriptures concerning Jesus.  If you want knowledge, truth and life, come to the One who said: I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me.
